CORSIA stands for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, which is a global market-based measure developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to address CO2 emissions from international aviation.

Objectives

• Reduce Aviation Emissions: CORSIA aims to stabilize CO2 emissions at 2020 levels by requiring airlines to offset the growth in their emissions above 2020 levels.
• Market-Based Mechanism: It uses carbon offsets and promotes using sustainable aviation fuels to achieve emission reductions.

Key Features

1. Phases of Implementation:
   • Pilot Phase (2021-2023): Participation is voluntary.
   • First Phase (2024-2026): Participation is mandatory.
   • Second Phase (2027 onwards): Participation becomes mandatory for most countries, except for certain exempted states (e.g., least developed countries, small island developing states).
2. Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV):
   • Airlines are required to monitor their CO2 emissions on international flights, report these emissions annually, and have the reports verified by an independent third party.
3. Carbon Offsets:
   • Airlines need to purchase and cancel carbon credits from approved programs to offset their emissions above the baseline (2019 levels).
4. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF):
   • Airlines can use SAF, which has lower lifecycle emissions compared to conventional jet fuels, to reduce their offsetting obligations.

Verification and validation are crucial components of CORSIA’s Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system, ensuring the integrity and transparency of the scheme. Here’s how these processes relate to CORSIA.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV)

• Monitoring: Airlines are required to monitor their CO2 emissions on a per-flight basis. This involves collecting accurate data on fuel consumption and other relevant metrics.
• Reporting: Airlines must compile this data into annual emission reports and submit these to the relevant authorities.
• Verification: Independent verification bodies review these reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with CORSIA standards.

Verification

• Role: Verification ensures that the reported emissions data is accurate, complete, consistent, and conforms to CORSIA’s requirements.
• Process: Verification bodies conduct thorough checks of the airlines’ monitoring and reporting processes. This includes reviewing the data collection methods, calculations, and overall report integrity.
• Outcome: Verified emissions reports provide confidence to regulators, the public, and other stakeholders that the emissions data is reliable.

Validation

• Role: While less emphasized in CORSIA than verification, validation generally refers to confirming that the methods and systems used by airlines to monitor and report emissions are sound and comply with CORSIA requirements.
• Process: Validation might involve initial checks on the monitoring plans and methodologies to ensure they meet the necessary standards before full-scale implementation.

Cas-net also provides verification and validation services.  We are working hard to play a pivotal role in the CORSIA MRV system implementation in Nigeria. Our service in this area includes.

• Independent Verification: Providing an unbiased review of the emissions data reported by airlines. We operate independently of the airlines we verify to avoid conflicts of interest.
• Compliance Checks: Cas-net ensure that airlines comply with CORSIA’s MRV requirements. This includes verifying that emissions are calculated correctly and that the monitoring processes are credible and realistic
• Reporting: Cas-net submits verification reports to the airlines and relevant authorities, confirming whether the reported emissions data is accurate and compliant.

CAS-NET is working to achieve international accreditation by recognized accreditation bod in most of our schemes including CORSIA. This will enable us verify emission reports. This involves meeting specific competence and independence criteria. Airlines’ emissions reports are subject to annual verification by these accredited bodies. The verification process involves detailed checks and validations. Verified emissions reports enhance the transparency and accountability of the CORSIA scheme, ensuring that airlines are held responsible for their emissions and offsetting obligations.
